A tense truce holds between the Capulets and the Montagues after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Benvolio, Romeo's best friend, is in love with Rosaline, Juliet's cousin; but Rosaline is bent on revenge. After Juliet was written by the playwright Sharman Macdonald and was commissioned for the 1999 National Theatre Connections programme.

I was drawn to the plays edgy mood and Macdonald's choice of language that could place the story at any time or any location. It is a sincere, sorrowful, and angry play full of wonderful moments of theatre and a real challenge for the young performers. Stephen Finegold, director.

Performed as part of the National Theatre's Connections festival.
